The Boys on the Beaches

When they give the command

Carve your silhouette in the sand,

A nameless outline

Lying in the shallows.

Put your life on a table

For someone else to play.

I am one of many who were

Necessarily erased.

Maybe you wouldn’t mind

Drowning in the sound of the waves,

Washed away with the tide,

Peril dropping from the sky.

You wonder where we’ve all gone,

Blurred around the edges

And shifting with the wind,

Ghostly bodies under the sun.
